2011 NBA Draft Prospect Profiles A seasoned product of the esteemed Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, Duke's Nolan Smith saw limited action in his first season with the Blue Devils, but he was named the team's starting point guard as a sophomore. While he was later replaced by John Scheyer, Smith has proven to be a valuable contributor at both guard positions for Duke and currently leads the team in scoring with an average of 19.6 ppg (through 14 games) and has the highest assist (5.9 apg) and rebound (4.9 rpg) averages of his career as a senior. Smith began the 2010 11 season starting opposite freshman phenom point guard Kyrie Irving, but due to a foot injury to Irving, he has slid back over to the point for the Blue Devils. A skilled player who can do a little bit of everything, Smith exhibits good court vision and a strong feel for the game on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court, which help to compensate for a lack of explosiveness. While he will never dominate his opponent with his athletic abilities, Smith is a smart, versatile guard who has spent solid minutes both running the point and playing off guard for Duke. That in itself, coupled with a championship pedigree and four years with head coach Mike Krzyzewski, will likely make Smith a desirable commodity at the next level. As with Illinois point guard Demetri McCamey, intangibles such as a high basketball IQ and leadership abilities will likely result in Smith hearing his name called on draft day, but it remains to be seen if Smith, like McCamey, can sneak above the second round.
